GLASGOW GREEN, GLASGOW

Glasgow Green, Greendyke Street, Saltmarket, Glasgow

October 2020 — The Glasgow Parks COVID-19 Lockdown Series

As Glasgow’s oldest public park, the Green has borne witness to centuries of civic history. By October 2020, as autumn set in and tightening COVID-19 lockdown restrictions once again shrank our worlds, its vast open lawns became an essential pressure valve for a weary city.

This print captures a community navigating the subtle friction of that lockdown autumn. Framed against the iconic 2014 Commonwealth Games legacy sculpture, the scene records a distinct shift in public mood: life continues under official health advice, but the lighthearted ease of summer has given way to a quiet, cautious discipline.

Look closely to find the quiet, contrasting realities of pandemic life. Kites dance high in the sky above the turf, yet below them, heads remain down. People move purposefully across the grass—jogging, cycling, and taking their permitted daily exercise—yet every path and interaction maintains a careful, deliberate distance.

It stands as a visual record of collective resilience during lockdown: a snapshot of how we kept moving forward together, even while forced to stay apart, using our shared public ground to find air, motion, and a quiet sense of solidarity.
