OLD STATION PARK, GLASGOW
Old Station Park, Hughenden Rd, Glasgow
July 2021 — The Glasgow Parks COVID-19 Lockdown Series
Tucked quietly behind Hyndland Road, Old Station Park holds the memory of the neighbourhood’s railway past, converted into a vital pocket of green. In July 2021, as COVID-19 lockdown restrictions still shaped daily life, these former railway grounds became an essential open-air refuge—a place where isolated neighbours could step out into the daylight and share a patch of open space.
Instead of a passive view, this illustration serves as an active social record of pandemic life. It catches the city mid-pause, documenting how a neighbourhood recalibrated its daily habits when indoor gyms, sports clubs, and gathering places vanished overnight during lockdown.
Look closely at the scene to find the unscripted stories of that summer: boys shooting hoops on the tarmac court; kids scrambled high across the climbing frame; and on the grass, a lady powering through a personal training session—taking fitness outdoors because indoor facilities were still restricted.
It’s a prompt to look up from our screens, slow our stride, and notice the human rhythms constantly playing out in our local spaces.
