KELVINGROVE PARK, GLASGOW

Kelvingrove Park, Park Terrace, Glasgow.

May 2021 — The Glasgow Parks COVID-19 Lockdown Series

Sprawling along the River Kelvin, Kelvingrove has long been the grand heart of the West End. By May 2021, as spring bloomed and months of strict COVID-19 lockdown rules began to ease, the park became a living map of our tentative return to public life after prolonged isolation.

This print captures a city caught in a delicate transition—balancing the joy of long-awaited reunions with the quiet habit of lingering pandemic caution. The park's wide avenues provided the open space needed to negotiate these new boundaries safely.

Look closely at the scene to find these shifting social dynamics: a family group walks tightly clustered together, enjoying the freedom to move as one, while nearby strangers maintain a careful, deliberate distance on the paths. Along the grass, a group of young mothers powers through an outdoor fitness class, pushchairs lined up beside them as they reclaim routine, health, and community under the open sky.

It stands as a visual record of a community slowly reopening after lockdown—a reminder of how we used our shared green spaces to safely find our way back to one another.
