June 2021 — The Glasgow Parks COVID-19 Lockdown Series

Sitting at the top of Byres Road, the Botanic Gardens are a cornerstone of West End life. By June 2021, as the city navigated the slow, cautious easing of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, the park became a living study in a community gradually letting its guard down after months of strict isolation.

This print documents a subtle turning point in our collective mindset. While lockdown rules kept the iconic Kibble Palace and grand glasshouses firmly locked, the surrounding grounds became an essential open-air refuge where the pandemic's pervasive tension began to soften into something distinctly more relaxed.

Look closely at the scene to spot the nuances of that transitional summer: crowds lounging across the sunlit lawns with an easy, unhurried warmth; yet scattered along the paths, one or two individuals continue to wear face masks—a quiet visual reminder of lingering vigilance amid our expanding freedoms.

It captures a community mid-exhale: an authentic record of how we adapted to shifting lockdown rules, finding comfort and connection in the outdoors even while the doors to our most cherished indoor spaces remained closed.
